In total, four major polling companies all simultaneously said it was the highest lead they had ever recorded for Keir Starmer’s party after turmoil on the markets.
The poll, carried out by YouGov for the Times, found that Starmer has an approval rating of 45 per cent while the Tories led by new prime minister Liz Truss trail behind at 28 per cent.

The suggestion was made in a draft report of a constitutional review led by former prime minister Gordon Brown.
The poll, based on 1,500 voters found that Starmer was four points ahead of Truss, with 39 per cent backing him against 35 per cents supporting her.
If the results were repeated at a general election, Labour would win a 126 seat majority, with a string of prominent Tory MPs losing their seats, including Boris Johnson, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Grant Shapps and Dominic Raab.
