More than 81 Labour MPs have now called for Keir Starmer to resign as the Prime Minister fights for his political survival.
In a dramatic 24 hours in Westminster the number of Labour MPs calling for Starmer to resign has steadily increased. It comes after a difficult set of local election results last week for the Labour Party, which saw it lose hundreds of council seats to Reform and the Green Party.
Yesterday the Prime Minister gave the most significant speech of his premiership to date, telling his doubters he will prove them wrong and vowing to fight any leadership change. The Prime Minister also acknowledged that ‘incremental’ change was not enough as he pledged to be bigger and bolder.
All eyes turned to Labour MPs on what their reaction to the speech would be and whether it was enough to ward off any leadership challenge.
Since then the number of MPs calling for the PM to go or set out a timetable for his departure has increased now hitting more than 81. That number is significant because any challenger to Sir Keir would instead require the support of 81 MPs – 20 per cent of the party in the Commons – to trigger a contest.
The Prime Minister however has told cabinet this morning that he will not resign, saying: “The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a cabinet.”
