No cabinet minister challenged Keir Starmer to resign at this morning’s crucial cabinet meeting, it has emerged, amid a chaotic few days in Westminster.

It comes after more than 80 Labour MPs called on Keir Starmer to resign or set out a timetable for his departure, following a difficult set of local election results for the party last week which saw it lose seats to Reform and the Greens.

Since then, there has been intense speculation about the Prime Minister’s future amid talk of an imminent leadership challenge.

However, the Prime Minister has insisted that he is going nowhere, and is determined to get on with the job of governing the country.

Emerging from today’s cabinet meeting, Pat McFadden said that no cabinet minister challenged the Prime Minister around the table this morning.

The Prime Minister told the cabinet: “As I said yesterday, I take responsibility for these election results and I take responsibility for delivering the change we promised.

“The past 48 hours have been destabilising for government and that has a real economic cost for our country and for families. The Labour party has a process for challenging a leader and that has not been triggered.

“The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a cabinet.”
