Over 100 Labour MPs sign letter backing Keir Starmer and opposing leadership contest – see the full list

More MPs have signed this letter than have called for Starmer to go

More than 100 backbench Labour MPs and parliamentary private secretaries have signed an open letter backing the prime minister Keir Starmer and saying now is ‘no time for a leadership contest’.

According to a report from the Guardian’s Jessica Elgot, the letter says: Last week we had a devastatingly tough set of election results. It shows we have a hard job ahead to win back trust from the electorate.”

“That job needs to start today – with all of us working together to deliver the change the country needs. We must focus on that. This is no time for a leadership contest.”

111 Labour MPs are reported to have signed the letter. That’s higher than the number of MPs who have publicly called for Starmer to go, which at the time of writing sits at 89.

The letter comes on a day when Starmer has faced increasing pressure to resign. Not only have those 89 MPs called for his departure, three ministers have resigned from the government making the same call – Miatta Fahnbulleh, Jess Phillips and Alex Davies-Jones.

Starmer has continued to maintain that he intends to remain as prime minister and resist calls for his resignation.
