Allies of Andy Burnham say that they have identified an MP who is willing to get on board with a plan to stand down and let him run so he can return to Westminster in time for any leadership challenge to Keir Starmer.
It comes amid leadership speculation over the future of the Prime Minister after the Labour Party lost hundreds of seats in the local elections last week.
A number of Labour Party MPs have called on Keir Starmer to quit or set a timetable for his departure, however the Prime Minister has said he will not walk away and plunge the country into further chaos.
Speculation has been rife about who could challenge the Prime Minister, with Wes Streeting and Angela Rayner mentioned, alongside the Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham.
However, Burnham would need to become an MP in order to be eligible.
Politico reports that Burnham’s allies ‘reckon they have a plan to get him back in’.
“Two different people told Playbook last night a specific MP has been identified and is on board with a plan to stand down and let him run. The identity of said MP is being kept closely guarded, even from some of the Manchester mayor’s allies”, it adds.
