A board member of Reform UK has admitted that it is a ‘very very hard task’ to beat Andy Burnham, with the Mayor of Greater Manchester expected to win what is being billed the ‘most consequential by-election’ in British political history.

Voters go to the polls in Makerfield on Thursday, with Burnham hoping to win the seat so that he can challenge for the Labour leadership.

Speaking to Times Radio, Reform board member Gawain Towler conceded that Burnham ‘does change the weather’ and that it is proving hard to beat him.

He said: “I think it’s a very very hard ask, I think if it was anybody but Burnham, I think we’d be a shoe in, but Burnham does change the weather, let’s be honest about it.”

He also criticised the level of coverage being given to Restore, with Rupert Lowe’s party eating into Reform’s vote.

Towler said he still hoped Reform could pull off a victory in Makerfield, but admitted it was a ‘big tough ask’.

Reform aren’t sounding as confident as they once were.
