Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to face his first major test as Labour leader with close to 100 Labour MPs pushing for a national commission on electoral reform.
The Guardian reports that ‘Burnham, a longtime advocate of electoral reform, will be asked to support the new commission into ditching first past the post in his first 100 days as prime minister’.
Burnham has previously made no secret of his support for electoral reform and said that first past the post breeds resentment by failing to represent voters.
A majority of MPs (53%) said they supported a review into first past the post – the current system of voting.
An amendment to the Representation of the People Bill, tabled by Alex Soble MP, which calls for the launch of the Commission into electoral reform, now has the backing of almost 100 Labour MPs from across the party including Luke Akehurst and Chris Curtis.
Labour MPs want Burnham to prioritise electoral reform in his first 100 days.
