An ally of Andy Burnham has told LFF that he should refuse to serve in Keir Starmer’s cabinet should he win the by-election in Makerfield and be offered a role, because he needs to distance himself from the current government.

The MP told LFF on the campaign trail in Makerfield that Burnham needed to portray himself as an insurgent and would ‘lose his credibility should he serve in the current administration’.

The MP said: “If he serves in the cabinet or leaves it too long, Andy will lose his insurgency”.

They also told LFF that should he become Labour leader, Burnham needs a completely new cabinet and should not include Wes Streeting in government, despite other allies of Burnham saying they expect him to bring the former health secretary back into cabinet.

Burnham confirmed last week that should he win the Makerfield by-election, he will be seeking to challenge Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership.

He has been setting out his vision for the country and vowed to take the Labour Party in a different direction.

Starmer however has insisted that he will be going nowhere and will not walk away from the mandate given to him at the last general election.
