Keir Starmer’s chief of staff has told Downing Street staff that the prime minister will resign today, according to a report from the New Statesman‘s Ailbhe Rea.
The news comes as STarmer is expected to make a statement outside Number 10 Downing Street this morning.
At the time of writing, a lectern is being set up outside the prime minister’s residence.
This follows weeks of speculation on Starmer’s future following disastrous local election results for the Labour Party. Pressure on Starmer to depart intensified following Andy Burnham’s victory in the Makerfield by-election.
