The poll, carried out by YouGov for the Times, found that Starmer has an approval rating of 45 per cent while the Tories led by new prime minister Liz Truss trail behind at 28 per cent.

“The face at the top may change but the story remains the same,” said Starmer, as the pair went head-to-head over the PM’s plans to tackle the energy crisis.

The poll, based on 1,500 voters found that Starmer was four points ahead of Truss, with 39 per cent backing him against 35 per cents supporting her.

If the results were repeated at a general election, Labour would win a 126 seat majority, with a string of prominent Tory MPs losing their seats, including Boris Johnson, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Grant Shapps and Dominic Raab.
