Chancellor John Healey couldn’t resist taking aim at Liz Truss during his budget speech, as the effects of her disastrous mini-budget continue to be felt across Britain until this day.

Truss’ premiership ended in disaster after she was booted out of office after just 49 days, following her mini-budget which included £45bn of unfunded tax cuts and which sent mortgage bills up and down the country soaring, while also collapsing the value of the pound.

Healey told the Commons that the International Monetary Fund had this month said the UK “stands out” among G7 countries in having a plan to narrow its deficit. He told MPs that the last time the economy was described like this by the IMF was after Liz Truss’ catastrophic mini-budget.

Rather than showing humility following her role in crashing the economy, Truss has sought to blame everyone else including the Bank of England and the ‘deep state’ for her disastrous policies.

She has now written a new book called the ‘Bank Job’ in which she doubles down on her arguments blaming the ‘left-leaning establishment’.

Referencing claims from Truss in the book that Britain would be sending space missions to Mars by 2040 if she was still prime minister, Healey said: “Her new book says she could have taken the British people to Mars.

“But in reality what she achieved in government, with help from the shadow chancellor, was blowing a big black hole in the budget.”
