Former Prime Minister Liz Truss, whose premiership ended in disaster after she was booted out of office after just 49 days, has been brutally mocked after unveiling the cover of her upcoming new book, Bank Job.
The book is Truss’ explanation of the disastrous mini-budget, which sent mortgage bills and inflation soaring, while also causing the collapse of the pound. Rather than accepting responsibility for her disastrous policies, which included £45 billion of unfunded tax cuts, Truss has sought to blame the ‘establishment’ and ‘Bank of England’ for why it all went wrong.
She was eventually booted out of office after just a few weeks, making her Britain’s shortest-serving Prime Minister in history, yet rather than engage in a period of self-reflection or show humility, she has continued to blame everyone else.
Her latest book is about ‘how the Bank of England broke the bond market and brought down the government’ and will be published on the same day as the first Budget of Andy Burnham’s government on October 28.
According to the press release, this new tome will “lift the lid on what really happened around the Mini-Budget in 2022, challenging the establishment narrative and examining in particular the role of the unaccountable Bank of England”.
What has caught the attention of many is the front cover – which is in the style of the crime thriller film Reservoir Dogs – showing Truss behind a government desk with a famous red ministerial box.
Five men in sunglasses stand behind her, including former prime ministers, Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, ex-Bank of England governors Mark Carney and Mervyn King along with former chancellor George Osborne.
Reacting to her post, one social media user wrote: “Still can’t just accept that it was you being a moron that spooked the markets and brought down the government, can you?”
Her own former trade policy minister launched a scathing attack on her. Sir Conor Burns said: “Here is a summary: she announced £100 billion of uncosted energy ‘support’. The markets and the party realised she was a nut job and financially illiterate. And she was, mercifully, ejected.
“She is now an international embarrassment with zero self awareness.”
