Mothin Ali calls for government to declare national emergency on racism and blasts Reform’s Suella Braverman in conference speech
The Green deputy co-leader hit out at Suella Braverman's recent comments about "Englishness" and ethnicity
The deputy co-leader of the Green Party, Mothin Ali, has called on Andy Burnham to recognise racism as a national emergency in his speech at Green Party conference.
Ali said that Britain is facing “unprecedented levels of racist violence and intimidation”, and said the country needs leadership to tackle the issue.
The Green Party deputy co-leader also used his speech to criticise Reform MP Suella Braverman’s comments about “Englishness”.
Referring to Suella Braverman’s comment last week that she is “not English” due to her Asian heritage, Ali said: “And a message to Suella, I’m Brown, I’m Muslim. But I’m as English as a Yorkshire cup of tea!”.
Ali said: “And at a time when Britain is facing unprecedented levels of racist violence and intimidation. The country needs leadership.
“So I’m calling on Andy Burnham to recognise this as a national emergency. Because this is not just a policing problem.
“It’s a test of whether a diverse democracy can protect the equal right of everybody to belong.”
