Conservative research shows there’s no debt crisis

David Cameron mentioned the phrase “debt crisis” eight times in his speech yesterday. On Sunday, speaking on the Andrew Marr show, George Osborne said, “the difference between Britain and countries like France and Germany is that we have an absolutely enormous budget deficit.” But research used by the Conservative Party show that Britain’s debt position is far from in crisis despite their claims.

Express: paying pensions and child benefit is “madness”

Today’s front-page lead on the Daily Express – LABOUR’S £186BN BENEFITS MADNESS – revealed that in 2009/10 spending on benefits would amount to a quarter of all State spending. The “madness” to which the Express refers is, presumably, their belieftest

Education spending cuts? Telegraph figures called into doubt

The Daily Telegraph’s front page today announces that, “Education spending to be cut by £100m.” But a deeper look at the figures reveals that total spending by the Department for Children, Schools and Families will increase in real terms by 1.37% from 2009-10 to 2010-11. If expenditure on innovation, universities and skills is included, spending still increases by 0.68%.
