David Cameron’s “wholehearted commitment to the NHS” came under fire from one of his own side again last night as yet another Tory MEP brought into question the very ideals of the health service. Tory MEP Charles Tannock said: “We need to look at these issues again, I know they are controversial but I don’t think that people who are in a job would actually be against, say, spending £10 to see their GP”
The international online civic organisation, Avaaz, is promoting a petition from Brits to “the US Congress and the people of America” which states, “We urge you to ignore the myths about health systems in our country and others that are being pushed by US healthcare companies.”
In George Osborne’s speech to Demos last week, he looked to Sweden to provide evidence for how a Conservative government could reform the education system and provide “more for less” while also delivering high standards. But the reforms would cost £1.2 billion and it’s not clear that the Swedish system is the panacea that the Conservative Party suggest.
