Labour NEC election results revealed

The results from the latest elections for Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) have been revealed, with a mixed picture for different wings of the party.

The NEC is influential, given that it is responsible for providing Labour’s strategic direction and national governance, and also exerts influence over candidate selections, election campaigns and party messaging.

A number of different groups were vying for seats in this year’s elections, including over nine significant seats allocated to constituency Labour parties (CLPs).

That included Labour to Win, associate with the right of the party, as well as the far-left Momentum and also new group Mainstream, which represents the soft-left and describes itself as non-factional. The Mainstream group was formed last year with Burnham’s backing and championed his cause in parliament.

The latest results show a mixed picture, Labour to Win saw all four of their CLP candidates elected to the NEC, with two of Mainstream’s three candidates and two of the Centre-Left Grassroots Alliance candidates also elected.

New faction Restoration saw one of their candidates, Andrew Achilleos, elected to the NEC.

Abdi Duale, from the Labour to Win faction, said: “This result is a strong endorsement of the direction our party has taken and of the changes we have made to rebuild Labour as a serious, disciplined and election-winning force.

“Members have had a clear choice about the future direction of our party. The message from this election is that they want us to build on the progress we have made, not turn the clock back.”

Mainstream posted on X: “Labour members have voted for a much more diverse, open and pluralistic NEC.

“We thank everyone who supported the Mainstream team in these elections! Kerry and Cat will honour the trust you have placed in them.”
