Majority of Brits would vote to rejoin the EU in referendum re-run

Just 27% of people would vote to remain outside of the EU

A majority of British people would vote to rejoin the European Union if a fresh referendum vote were held.

A new poll by YouGov for The Times has found that in the event of another referendum, 52% of Brits would opt for Britain to rejoin the EU.

By contrast, just 27% of voters would vote to remain outside of the EU, while 7% said they would not vote and 15% said they didn’t know how they would vote.

The findings come after Andy Burnham said he would consider taking the UK back into the EU at the next election in an interview with the BBC at Labour Party conference.

Burnham said “Brexit has caused more harm than good” and that he would consider three key options: rejoining the EU, rejoining the single market, and entering a customs union.

He indicated that he may include a second referendum pledge in Labour’s manifesto at the next election.

The survey suggests that the British public thinks there should be a referendum before any decision is made on rejoining the EU, with 64% identifying this as their preferred option.

The option is backed by Brexit backers and remainers alike, but is more popular among Brexiteers.

It found that 54% of those who say they would vote to rejoin the EU would want a second referendum and 94% of those who would vote leave wanting a re-run of the vote.
