With Keir Starmer announcing yesterday on the steps of Downing Street that he would be stepping down as Prime Minister, the starting gun on a contest to replace him as Labour leader has been fired.

Starmer told the country that nominations for leader would open on 9th July. Should no challenger emerge to Burnham, he could be in Downing Street as early as 17th July. However, more details have emerged since then on the timetable.

According to Politics Home, the full timetable reveals that nominations close on 15th July and that even if all MPs nominate before 15 July or more than 80% back Burnham, the window won’t be shortened.

Here’s the timetable in full:

  • MPs nominate: Thursday 9 July to Wednesday 15 July
  • MP hustings: Monday 13 July
  • Affiliated organisations nominate: Wednesday 15 July at 6pm to Thursday 16 July at 6pm
  • Special conference to confirm result on Friday 17 July
