The Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has left the door open to calling a snap general election should he becomes Prime Minister.
The Sun has reported the claims on Sunday, citing senior Labour Party sources, and the claims have not been denied by Burnham’s team.
Burnham is currently the Labour Party’s candidate in the Makerfield by-election, and should he win, is expected to challenge Sir Keir Starmer for the leadership of the Labour Party and the position of Prime Minister.
It is believed that he is likely to seek his own mandate from the country for what he sees as a bold and new direction for the government.
Burnham is also reportedly lining up Shabana Mahmood to be his Chancellor, while also being keen to return Angela Rayner to the Cabinet.
