A provocative campaign video calls for change in Westminster
The Green Party have just released an election broadcast called ‘Change the Tune’, parodying boy band music videos.
Playing on their motto that ‘the politics of the future does not have to look like the politics of the past’, the video shows comedians playing David Cameron, Nick Clegg, Ed Miliband and Nigel Farage, who form a boy band called Coalition. All looking very similar, they sing about their love of austerity and fracking.
“A vote for me’s the same as a vote for any of us guys”, sings a Cameron-a-like at the piano.”
Then they are all shown bickering:
“He’ll fire all your docs and nurses / He’ll clamp down on public service / He sold the railways to companies / And we all agree on tuition fees!”
Responding to claims that a vote for the Greens is a ‘wasted vote’, the video is designed to discourage tactical voting, opening with:
“The only wasted vote is a vote you don’t believe in.”
The video closes with the message:
“All over the country, people are standing up to change the tune. Voting true, not tactical….we believe in the people controlling politics, not the other way round.”
Green leader Natalie Bennett has accused all other parties of signing up to a Westminster consensus on austerity, privatisation and inaction on public services, and commented:
“For many years the establishment parties have been singing from the same hymn sheet.
“Voting Green on 7 May is a chance for people to play their part in breaking open the political harmony of the establishment parties.”
