A Finnish MEP and ally of David Cameron with a criminal record for inciting racial hatred has been appointed to the Civil Liberties Committee of the European Parliament.

Jussi Halla-Aho, a member of the Tory-aligned European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, was convicted in 2012 of ethnic agitation and breaching the religious peace after writing a blog post in which he accused Islam of ‘sanctifying paedophilia’.

A report was also filed over blog posts in which Halla-Aho sarcastically stated that robbery and living on taxpayers money were cultural and possibly genetic characteristics of Somalis.

Halo-Aho is a member of the True Finns party, which has courted controversy in the past after a member of the party was photographed giving a Nazi salute on the steps of the Finnish parliament. In another incident, an opinion poll of True Finn voters revealed that 51 per cent agreed with the statement: ‘People of certain races are unsuited for life in a modern society’.

The party is also vehemently opposed to same sex marriage.

Yet despite all of this, Halla-Aho was yesterday appointed to the European Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee of the European Parliament.

Last month Tory MEPs admitted the far-right Danish People’s Party (DPP) and True Finns to the European Conservatives and Reformists group [ECR], established by David Cameron in 2009. A DPP figure was convicted in 2002 for publishing material that appeared to link a multiethnic society to rape, violence and forced marriages.
