With the announcement today that Sir Alex Ferguson will be retiring as manager of Manchester United at the end of the 2012/13 season after 26 years in the job, Left Foot Forward thought it fitting to look at some of Sir Alex's best political quotes.

-
On David Cameron: “How can it be class war to say the guy went to Eton, or that he was part of some dreadful right-wing social club at Oxford? Where you come from does matter you know. His policies are about helping his own sort.”
-
On Margaret Thatcher: “The images of decay and neglect have remained with me and I have never ceased to curse the Tory government for vandalising the National Health Service. Margaret Thatcher’s aggressive efforts to privatise health care in this country were a betrayal of a service that has been one of the proudest achievements of our society…Her policies ruined people’s lives and stripped them of their dignity.
-
On being told by a journalist that he and Thatcher shared an ability to survive on only five hours’ sleep, Ferguson replied: “Don’t associate me with that woman.”
-
On Nick Clegg: “I mean he was fine, and spoke well enough, but I was no clearer what he was about than I was at the beginning.”
-
On David Cameron: [He] “looked really weak under pressure, and that is the last thing you want in a prime minister.”

That’s exactly the kind of elitism that had ruined democracy. Ferguson, the bin man that lives down the road and you and me all have one thing in common – we have a right to be considered equal. Just because some toff can go to Oxford or Cambridge on a trust fund to embark on a life in career politics, doesn’t make them any more capable of commenting on society then anyone else. If anything, it makes them LESS capable because they’ve never really lived IN society. ‘Relevant’?? How is politicians having stocks and shares in companies that are granted tax breaks and subsidies ‘relevant’? Come on, seriously…
It matters what everyone thinks, not just a handful of privileged men in The City.
Speaking of which, this is coming from a Manchester City fan, so I must feel strongly about it if I’m coming to his defence!

I’m now looking forward to LFF covering political views of other ordinary people:-
– Harry Rednaps’s opinion on tax
– Paulo Dicannio’s views on immigration
– Arsene Wenger’s view of free glasses on NHS

When all else fails, resort to sarcasm – the most intelligent form of argument. I’m sure you have done already, but if not, give yourself a pat on the back.

Thank you
