With the announcement today that Sir Alex Ferguson will be retiring as manager of Manchester United at the end of the 2012/13 season after 26 years in the job, Left Foot Forward thought it fitting to look at some of Sir Alex’s best political quotes.

  1. On David Cameron: “How can it be class war to say the guy went to Eton, or that he was part of some dreadful right-wing social club at Oxford? Where you come from does matter you know. His policies are about helping his own sort.”

  2. On Margaret Thatcher: “The images of decay and neglect have remained with me and I have never ceased to curse the Tory government for vandalising the National Health Service. Margaret Thatcher’s aggressive efforts to privatise health care in this country were a betrayal of a service that has been one of the proudest achievements of our society…Her policies ruined people’s lives and stripped them of their dignity.

  3. On being told by a journalist that he and Thatcher shared an ability to survive on only five hours’ sleep, Ferguson replied: “Don’t associate me with that woman.”

  4. On Nick Clegg: “I mean he was fine, and spoke well enough, but I was no clearer what he was about than I was at the beginning.”

  5. On David Cameron: [He] “looked really weak under pressure, and that is the last thing you want in a prime minister.”

Didn’t know these…I think the quote about the importance of where you come from is the best. Three square miles dominate Britain…Windsor and Eaton, the City of London, and the part of Glasgow that Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Bill Shankly, Matt Busby and Jock Stein all grew up in!

He’s not saying he shouldn’t be allowed to express a viewpoint (I wouldn’t imagine). He’s saying that he’s not a relevant person to go to for comment on things like this. If I went to my editor and said I rang up Fergie for a comment on the latest coalition policy, he’d probably run it anyway because it’s fucking Fergie, but people would think: “Well, what the fuck does it matter what he thinks?”

Ferguson has always had political views – he has always been on the side of working people – as a City fan I have hated him but compared to many people in football he is an intelligent man who has never been afraid to speak his mind and stand up for a fairer society. A socialist in the fine tradition of Shankly, Stein and Clough.

As usual when it comes to politics, Sir Alex Ferguson speaks very well.
