Former Conservative MP Edwina Currie offended a whole section of the demographic again today by saying that young people won’t vote or have economic power until they “start working, pay taxes, learn sense”.
On the day that David Cameron revealed drastic cuts to housing benefits for under-25s, Edwina Currie had no problem airing her views on the matter.
However, her comments are sure to offend many under 25s, after she implied that none of them work, vote or have any sense.
Responding to a tweet from @racybaldhero, Currie said:
The under 25s and futureless youth will make you pay for attacking them as you defend your wealthy friends.
To which she replied:
No they won’t. They have the vote, don’t use it & have no economic power. Not till they start working, pay taxes, learn sense.”
Left Foot Forward has previously reported on Currie’s unsubtle distaste for the less well-off, after she made a woman cry on a Radio 5 phone-in and refused to believe that people were going hungry in the UK:
“Are you telling me people in this country are going hungry? Seriously? Seriously? Do you know, I really have great difficulty believing that.”
“I don’t think people in this country go hungry. But are these people at the same time maybe buying the odd lottery ticket? Do they just occasionally have the odd cigarette? Somewhere along the line does food come as the first priority?”

• Currie v Jones: Do people go hungry in Britain? 14 Nov 2011
Commentators throughout the day have debated why Cameron felt it necessary to attack young people with his new measures but perhaps Currie has let on an attitude felt throughout the Conservative Party – young people have no ‘economic power’ (a.k.a wealth) so they are not favoured by the Tories.

No, but they can sure fool some people some of the time.
Shame there’s no real alternative. Since Labour refuse to be.
