Hottest year & decade on record as Arctic sea ice faces record low

It’s hot, isn’t it? In fact, worldwide, we just had the warmest May, warmest Spring, and warmest January-May on record – that’s according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association (NOAA) of the US government – and that’s all despite the fact we’ve been in “the deepest solar minimum in nearly a century”.

It was also the hottest April on record in the NASA dataset. More significantly, NASA says it followed hot on the heels of the hottest March and hottest Jan-Feb-March on record. NASA, of course, predicted precisely this would happen this year, and they have produced this handy little graph to highlight the warming trend we’ve been seeing:

Meanwhile, the National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) have produced the following graph to show what’s happening to Arctic Sea Ice as a result. As you can see, it’s heading to its lowest ever levels. Essentially the ice is just getting thinner and disappearing.

Joe Romm at Climateprogress.org has highlighted how inconvenient all this is for the world’s most-read climate denier blogger, Anthony Watts. He has said:

“Arctic Basin ice generally looks healthier than 20 years ago.”

And:

“Over the last three years, Arctic Ice has gained significantly in thickness….  Conclusion : Should we expect a nice recovery this summer due to the thicker ice? You bet ya.”

Oh dear Anthony. Could it be possible to be more comprehensively proved wrong?

    Some of the comments above effortlessly highlight the desperation of the most dogmatic deniers. But, if you want to look at Arctic Sea Ice over a longer time frame, take a look at the graph here, which speaks for itself:

    @Joss,

    “Dogmatic Deniers”???

    So you have chosen to ignore the actual accusation of misrepresentation to make a point.

    Just so it is clear – I have labelled you a snake oil salesman on my blog. I’ve also pointed out the evidence of Antartic sea ice if you’d care to take a look.
