It’s hot, isn’t it? In fact, worldwide, we just had the warmest May, warmest Spring, and warmest January-May on record – that’s according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association (NOAA) of the US government – and that’s all despite the fact we’ve been in “the deepest solar minimum in nearly a century”.

It was also the hottest April on record in the NASA dataset. More significantly, NASA says it followed hot on the heels of the hottest March and hottest Jan-Feb-March on record. NASA, of course, predicted precisely this would happen this year, and they have produced this handy little graph to highlight the warming trend we’ve been seeing:
Meanwhile, the National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) have produced the following graph to show what’s happening to Arctic Sea Ice as a result. As you can see, it’s heading to its lowest ever levels. Essentially the ice is just getting thinner and disappearing.
Joe Romm at Climateprogress.org has highlighted how inconvenient all this is for the world’s most-read climate denier blogger, Anthony Watts. He has said:
“Arctic Basin ice generally looks healthier than 20 years ago.”
And:
“Over the last three years, Arctic Ice has gained significantly in thickness…. Conclusion : Should we expect a nice recovery this summer due to the thicker ice? You bet ya.”
Oh dear Anthony. Could it be possible to be more comprehensively proved wrong?

Given this is supposed to be an evidence based blog – then at least discuss the evidence properly.

Also wouldn’t it have been reasonable to quote The following from Watt’s original article:
“Conclusion : Should we expect a nice recovery this summer due to the thicker ice? You bet ya. Even if all the ice less than 2.5 metres thick melted this summer, we would still see a record high minimum in the DMI charts.”
and
“Anyone betting on the minimum extent needs to recognize that summer weather can dramatically effect the behaviour of the ice. The fact that the ice is thicker now is no guarantee that it won’t shrink substantially if the summer turns out to be very warm, windy or sunny. Joe Bastardi believes that it will be a warm summer in the Arctic. I’m not a weather forecaster and won’t make any weather predictions.”

[…] Left wing pseudo scientists Left Foot Forwards are up to their usual trick of manipulating the evidence to make a political point to attack Anthony Watt’s climate blog, over a decline compared to average levels of Artic […]

Will LFF write an apology to Anthony Watts – or is the blog cast from the same metal as Gordon “I don’t do apologies” Brown?
Here are my thoughts on your post.

Joss Garman – Your points may be valid, I don’t know but misleading people, as you are clearly attempting to do is wrong. Do you really think people are fools Joss Garman or are you just “Plain Stupid”?
If your case has merit then state it.
If your case is deliberately designed to mislead people by simply ignoring facts that don’t concur with your opinion then that is wrong.
“So why did 2008 start out with so little thick ice? Because during the summer of 2007 much of the ice melted or was compressed by the wind. During the winter of 2007-2008, much of the remaining thick ice blew out into the North Atlantic and melted. So by the time that summer 2008 arrived, there was very little ice left besides rotten, thin ice.”
