Abbott makes the ballot

Diane Abbott has made the Labour leadership ballot, joining Ed Balls, Andy Burnham, David Miliband and Ed Miliband.

Diane Abbott has made the Labour leadership ballot, joining Ed Balls, Andy Burnham, David Miliband and Ed Miliband, following John McDonnell’s honourable, last-minute withdrawal from the contest and a last-gasp push to get her past the 33 nominations mark.

Among those who nominated her today were Chris Bryant, Denis MacShane, Stephen Twigg, Phil Woolas and Jack Straw – and even David Miliband himself.

Labour MPs and MEPs; Labour Party members; and members of affiliated organisations, such as trades unions and socialist societies – each comprising one-third of the electoral college – will now be balloted.

Voting will take place between August 16 and September 22 with the winner being announced on the first day of the Labour Party conference in Manchester on September 25.

The first post-nominations hustings event, hosted by the New Statesman, takes place tonight, with the Fabian Society, in partnership with Left Foot Forward, Labour List, the Young Fabians and Compass, hosting a Labour leadership hustings in central London on Monday, June 14, from 7:30-9:00pm. A full list of hustings events can be found here.

Left Foot Forward will this evening outline progressive tests for the five candidates.
