One of the coalition’s tax advisers has resigned after being secretly filmed offering tips on how to keep money “out of the chancellor’s grubby mitts”.

David Heaton, who advised David Cameron’s HM Revenue and Customs on tax avoidance, was secretly filmed during an investigation by BBC Panorama and Private Eye telling an audience that they could exploit maternity pay rules “to get the government to pay your bonuses”.

The treasury told the BBC that Mr Heaton’s statements were “directly at odds with the government’s approach to tackling tax avoidance”.

Perhaps the government should vet its tax advisors a bit more carefully in future.
