Reform council chair quits over Islamophobic tweets and support for far-right groups

Maurice Eglin is facing calls to also step down as a councillor

The Reform chair of North Northamptonshire Council, councillor Maurice Eglin, has stepped down from his role over anti-Muslim and anti-Trans tweets, and voicing support for the far-right.

Eglin, who was elected to represent Barton Seagrave and Burton Latimer ward in May 2025, is now facing calls to step down as a councillor in light of his offensive posts.

Reform Party UK Exposed, wrote: “He needs to go as a councillor too”, while Green Party councillors in North Northamptonshire said constituents should be able to decide whether Eglin should continue to represent them.

As reported by local newspaper the NN Journal, in one of several anti-muslim tweets, Eglin called Islam “evil” and in others he reposted a tweet by Britain First leader Paul Golding and defended Tommy Robinson.

In a post from June 2024, Eglin said: “How about f*ck Islam the hate, evil Religion that would kill my kind!”.

In another post, he shared an image of a Muslim figure standing on top of a tower of skulls opposite a Christian figure standing on a pile of books.

Responding to a post by George Galloway, he called Galloway a ‘racist hater’ and said that convicted criminal Robinson is “standing up for all of the British gB nationals [sic]”.

In August 2024, he tweeted: “Please don’t tarnish all gay guys with the same brush as we don’t all agree with #LGBTQRIGHTS we hate where it has gone and is going. We believe in #LGBWithoutTheTQ and common sense.”

Eglin has apologised for the posts, and said “the language used in some of those posts was wrong and does not reflect the person I strive to be today”.

In a statement, the North Northamptonshire Green Group told Left Foot Forward: “We are appalled to read the comments Cllr Eglin has made about both the Muslim and Trans communities. The comments made by Eglin are deeply un-British.

“It’s comments like these that stoke up hate and violence, like burning pride banners in Rushden or encouraging riots in Belfast.

“This kind of bigotry has no place in civic life. We are elected to represent all of our constituents, not just those we agree with.

“He has made the right decision to step down as Chair of the council, but having undermined the trust placed in him, we believe it is right for the people of Burton and Barton to decide if he should continue to represent them.”
