Once a fierce cheerleader for Donald Trump, even Nigel Farage is now trying to distance himself from the President, following the humiliating defeat the Republicans suffered in this week’s midterm elections.

The GOP lost control of both the House and Senate to the Democrats, in what was a repudiation of Trump and his MAGA movement, with the Democrats winning seats they hadn’t won in decades. James Talarico marked the first time a Democrat has won a US Senate seat in Texas since 1988.

In Kansas Adam Hamilton became the first Democrat to be elected to the US senate since 1932, while in Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers.

Farage initially predicted that the Republican party would ‘not get absolutely smashed’, only to be proven wrong.

Now he is desperately trying to distance himself from Trump, accusing the US president of breaking a key promise to American voters when it came to staying out of ‘foreign wars’.

The Reform leader blamed the humiliating results for the Republicans on the Iran war. More than seven months later, the conflict is continuing with fuel prices still high.

“One thing about Trump, he always kept his promises,” Farage told reporters. “Said to the American people, I will do this. He did it.

“But in this case, he said, no more foreign wars and here we are in month eight of a war with no sign of ending. And that, and the resulting fuel prices, in the end has done the damage.”

Vice President JD Vance also blamed the Iran war for the losses suffered by the Republicans.
