Wales Green Party leader celebrates “historic breakthrough” in Senedd election in message to Green Party conference
'In a short few months the people of Wales have seen the difference elected Greens in our national Parliament make'
Wales Green Party leader Anthony Slaughter has celebrated the “historic breakthrough” his party achieved in this year’s Senedd election in a message to Green Party Conference.
In those elections, Slaughter was elected as one of the first two Green Party members ever elected to the Senedd, alongside John Dane.
Slaughter – who was not attending the conference for health reasons – had a message read out on his behalf by a fellow Wales Green Party member.
In his message, Slaughter said: “Conference, greetings from Wales and my heartfelt apologies that I am unable to join you at our biggest ever conference. A conference to celebrate our fantastic growth and achievements over the last year across both nations and an opportunity to consolidate and build on those victories as we move forward to even more electoral success at every level, starting of course with the election of our sixth Green MP next Thursday in Holborn and St Pancras.”
The message went on to say: “Here in Wales, our breakthrough into the Senedd, with the election of myself and Paul Rock as our first Green members was a truly historic breakthrough and in a short few months the people of Wales have seen the difference elected Greens in our national Parliament make as we continue to work hard on issues such as renters rights, climate and nature resilience, trans rights and so much more.
“I think this is an important moment to thank and recognise all those friends from England who crossed the border so often to help us achieve this success. Success that I am confident we will build on next May as we get Greens elected across Cymru in the nationwide Local Authority elections.”
“Of course our success in Wales does not stand in isolation. It is part of the wider Green surge that saw fantastic results across England, from Hannah’s historic by-election win in Gorton and Denton and breakthroughs across so many Councils and stunning results in London, particularly Hackey and Lewisham.”
