‘Trump not welcome in Manchester’ campaign launched ahead of 2027 G20 Summit
“We will be there in numbers to make clear that the UK needs to break with Trump, not roll out the red carpet again.”
A ‘Trump not welcome in Manchester’ campaign has been launched ahead of the 2027 G20 Summit, promising to build a major demonstration against the US president when world leaders descend on the city.
The campaign is organised by the Stop Trump Coalition and comes after the government confirmed Manchester will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit at Manchester Central Convention Centre on 27 and 28 November 2027.
The summit will be the largest international gathering ever held in Manchester, bringing together leaders from the world’s major economies, alongside thousands of diplomats and delegates.
And among the leaders expected to be invited is Donald Trump.
Prime minister Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, has said he is “really pleased” that he will be welcoming the US president to the city.
But the prospect of Trump arriving in Manchester represents a turnaround for Burnham.
In 2019, during Trump’s first presidency, Burnham told the Manchester Evening News that he “wouldn’t welcome” a visit from the American president.
Now, as prime minister, he will be at the centre of preparations for the summit and responsible for welcoming world leaders to Manchester.
The Stop Trump Coalition, however, is preparing for a very different kind of welcome.
The coalition was formed to oppose Trump and Trumpism and campaigns on issues including racism and Islamophobia, climate action, workers’ rights, migrants’ and refugees’ rights and trade justice.
When Trump visited the UK during his first term, the coalition helped mobilise huge demonstrations against him. Following his re-election, it has relaunched its organising efforts, arguing that his return to the White House makes resistance more urgent.
Its ‘2027: Trump Not Welcome in Manchester’ campaign is already looking ahead to next November, despite the summit being more than a year away.
The coalition says the scale and location of the G20 make it an opportunity to build a significant protest movement in Manchester, and potentially a major national demonstration.
“We know that it’s a year away – but this will be a huge summit, the biggest ever hosted in Manchester, and will be held in the heart of the city at the Manchester Central convention complex,” it says.
“With a full year to prepare, we can focus huge organising efforts on the city, building the biggest possible resistance to Trump locally – and setting the stage to make this a major national demonstration.
“We will be there in numbers to make clear that the UK needs to break with Trump, not roll out the red carpet again.”
The coalition is urging supporters to donate to help fund its campaign and begin organising ahead of the summit.
