UK is closer than ever to getting proportional representation, Labour MP claims
"Folks, we are nearly there"
The UK is closer to getting a proportional voting system than an at any point in history. That’s according to the Labour MP Alex Sobel.
Sobel made the comments at a fringe meeting at this year’s Labour Party conference. He also argued that Labour is ‘committed’ to changing the voting system.
Sobel told the meeting: “Labour is committed to changing the voting system. This is the first time that a minister in the governing party has committed to changing the Westminster voting system.
“We are closer now to this change than we have ever been in the history of this country – and that is what we need to hold on to.”
Sobel concluded by saying: “I’m afraid to say you can’t do it in a couple of weeks. It’s going to take some time for the nuts and bolts. But we have won this battle and now we just need to win it practically. So folks, we are nearly there.”
