Poll: Should Britain take in more refugees?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Have your say

The pictures of Aylan Kurdi, the three-year-old Syrian boy found washed up on a beach in Antalya, Turkey, appear to have (finally) brought it home to the British commentariat that more must be done to help those refugees currently fleeing from war and dictatorship.

As such, David Cameron is coming under increasing pressure to let in more refugees. Up to now the prime minister has responded that Britain is doing a great deal to help refugees – but by spending money on aid to be sent to the areas where people are fleeing in the first place.

But are the prime minister’s critics right – should Britain take in more refugees? Or is Britain, as the PM likes to point out, already doing its bit?

Have your say – the results of the poll will be published early next week.

I have never wanted to be rich, so I don’t feel particularly jealous but I do have a sense of right and wrong and I consider that with wealth comes responsibility to the community. We make other people rich by working for them so they need to pull their weight.

Take Donald Trump as an example of inherited wealth. His father inherited the wealth too. Trump doesn’t use his millions responsibly. He’s a bully. He’s powerful and he knows it and woe betide anybody who gets in the way (just ask anyone from Menie, Aberdeenshire.)

The Duke of Westminster, too, doesn’t fit my profile of anyone who’s particularly hard-working but he’s the wealthiest man in Britain and he owns a great deal of property in London, much of it vacant, which he regards simply as an investment (when many people are homeless and much of the social housing has been sold off and not replaced).

Those are two examples among several. Don’t they strike you as wrong – or do you just want to be a millionaire too?
