Fracking enjoys widespread support in Britain, according to a new survey.

Research carried out by the research group Populus for UK Onshore Oil and Gas (UKOOG) found that 57 per cent were in favour of the controversial tachnique which extracts shale gas from the ground.

The poll quizzed 4,000 people and found that 16 per cent were opposed, with just over a quarter (27 per cent) undecided.

The poll shows that the public would like to see the government use both shale gas and renewables to meet the country’s energy requirements.

I agree that we have a problem with energy and there is real fuel poverty, but that is NOT going to be relieved by fracking, which is a short term solution at best, an environmental disaster at worst. What do you understand when someone says, ‘environment’? Is it something you feel is far removed from you and your day to day problems? Or do you understand that the environment is the air you breathe, the water you drink, and the food you eat? You can’t say ‘put people before the planet’, because without a planet, there are no people! Fracking will poison the water and wreck the land. What if you get cheaper fuel bills? What will you drink? What will you do when the supermarkets have no deliveries and there is no unpoisioned land on which to grow food? Investment in renewables is the LONG TERM solution to the energy crisis, the fossil fuels will run out, probably sooner rather than later, what will you do then?

what makes you think that fracking is not subsidised? It will be taxed at half the oil industry pays…these companies are registered elsewhere and wont pay their here way much like the likes of Starbucks and Vodafone. As for jobs….they will be specialists brought in from abroad. Who is going to pay for the leaks/any mess created — not these companies- they’ll go bust first! Who is going to fund the NHS when people get sick because of the contaminated water/polluted atmosphere?? If you are home owner…your house will be worthless, damage to your house wont be insured (ask those in flooded areas what their premiums are like) And to cap it all the gas wont even be cheap!!! It has to be competitive with other forms of fuel…….yes its a great way to wreck peoples lives, health, our farming our environment but those things dont matter as long as the shareholders are getting their return!!!

just test drilling costs millions, companies will want a return on that investment! So there is a risk!!!

This is a propaganda site, replete with all the usual myths that have been falsified time and time again

Yes – and the risk is borne by the investors in that company – not by you and I. We just have to pay for the very bad risks taken by those who thought we could manage on windmills and solar. The windmill companies are insulated from the risk by the rigged market for renewables obligations and CFDs and for subsidised network connections to the grid. The subsidies we pay go abroad to the foreign investors in our windfarms.
