Has a privately run hospital really been named the best by experts?

For what possible reason would a company which specialises in outsourcing want to promote outsourcing and private sector involvement in the NHS?

According to Guido Fawkes today, a Circle-run hospital has been named as the best in England by experts.

“48 hours after Ed Miliband claimed that private companies were sending the NHS “backwards”, Circle-run Hinchingbrooke Hospital has been named the best hospital in England,” Guido writes.

So much for Ed Miliband’s claim that the coalition is undermining the NHS by putting “the principles of markets and competition at the heart of the NHS like never before”, eh?

Except that the so-called ‘experts’ who gave the award to the Circle-run hospital are none other than CHKS – that’s Capita to you and me.

And before you ask, yes that’s the same Capita which calls itself a “UK leader in business process management and outsourcing solutions”.

Now for what possible reason would a company which specialises in outsourcing want to promote outsourcing and private sector involvement in the NHS?

“The award, which went to the Hinchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trust, was judged by an expert panel based on 12 medical indicators, including how long patients had to stay in hospital after treatment, mortality rates and cancer waiting times”

Surely it’s possible to do an actual investigation and see whether these ‘medical indicators’ do suggest the Circle-run hospital is worthy of an award? If these indicators back up the claim of very high standards, then why does it matter who’s handing out the award?
