There was more grim poll news for David Cameron today, with a significant fall in perceptions of coalition competence over the past year, as Chart 1 shows.
An Ipsos Mori survey for tonight’s Standard reveals only 34% think the coalition will be able to react quickly in a crisis (down from 53% in April last year); 39% think it provides stable government (55% last April); 28% believe it is dealing with the economic crisis effectively (42% last April); and only 26% believe it is working as a united team (43% last April).
Chart 1:
Only 33% of voters are satisfied with the prime minister, with 60% dissatisfied – a net satisfaction rating of -27, compared to -18 for Ed Miliband (33% satisfied, 51% dissatisfied). Nick Clegg, meanwhile, has a net rating of -38, with 64% unhappy with his performance and just 26% pleased with him.
And for George Osborne, the poll is not much better – only 16% think the economy will improve in the next year, down from 29% before his widely-panned ‘omnishambles’ budget. Nearly fifty per cent of those polled think things will get worse.
Overall, Labour have are on 44% (up four points on June), the Conservatives are on 31% (unchanged), and the Lib Dems are on 12% (+2). It is Labour’s biggest lead over the Conservatives for five years.
• Poll: Cameron seen as out of touch, out of ideas, weak, indecisive and dislikeable 16 Jul 2012
The latest findings follow the weekend’s Sunday Times/YouGov poll which showed the public view the Tory leader as dislikeable (44%-42%), indecisive (47%-40%), weak (47%-38%), out of ideas (52%-32%) and out of touch (66%-23%). The summer recess and Olympics can’t come soon enough for the coalition.
