The shocking insensitivity of Glenn Beck’s “Hitler Youth” attack on the Utoya Island terror victims will come as no surprise to regular followers of his remarks.
Never one to be afraid of lowering the tone, Glenn Beck has once again sparked outrage across the world by comparing the innocent young victims of the horrific terror attack in Norway with members of the Hitler Youth.
Speaking on his syndicated radio show on Monday, Beck openly mocked the concept of a youth political camp:
“There was a shooting at a political camp, which sounds a little like the Hitler Youth, or, whatever. I mean, who does a camp for kids that’s all about politics. Disturbing.”
You can hear the extract below:
However, as the Guardian has reported, his comments may come as a shock to many of his supporters. The Tea Party have recently begun holding their own political summer camps, to teach youngsters about:
“God, the US constitution and ‘the defence of economic liberty’.”
Given Beck’s vocal support of the movement is this just another example of his hypocrisy or further evidence that the rubbish he spews has no rational thought process behind it?
The shocking insensitivity of his comments will come as no surprise to regular followers of his misdeeds. In particular he has past form for making light of atrocities.
In one of a series of attacks on George Soros, he made an ill-judged and tasteless joke comparing Soros’s current political activities to the Holocaust:
“Here’s a Jewish boy helping send the Jews to the death camps.”
Such comments had already led to him being booted off the Fox network earlier this year, following a combination of advertising boycotts and sagging ratings. We can only hope that this most recent outburst will lead to similar pressure on broadcasters of his radio show.
Unsurprisingly, his comments have sparked outrage in Norway, with Torbjørn Eriksen, a former press secretary to the Norwegian prime minister, Jens Stoltenberg, strongly rebutting Beck’s remarks, which he described as a “new low”.
He told the Daily Telegraph:
“Young political activists have gathered at Utøya for over 60 years to learn about and be part of democracy, the very opposite of what the Hitler Youth was about. Glenn Beck’s comments are ignorant, incorrect and extremely hurtful.”
Whether we will ever get the apology the Norwegian families deserve is doubtful; in Beck’s deranged mind he probably thinks denouncing the killings and comparing their impact to 9/11 will allow him to say whatever else he wants, without fear of repercussion.
