Yvette Cooper has topped Left Foot Forward’s readers’ poll of shadow cabinet candidates. The survey – carried out in association with Labour List and Liberal Conspiracy – was completed by 1,033 readers.
Readers were asked to vote in the same way as members of the Parliamentary Labour Party for at least six women and up to 19 candidates in total from the list of 49 Labour MPs who put themselves forward for election to the shadow cabinet. The real poll of Labour MPs concludes at 5pm this evening with results expected later tonight but Left Foot Forward’s own poll put Yvette Cooper in top spot with 960 votes (93 per cent) followed by leadership candidates Ed Balls (86%) and Andy Burnham (79%).
All four of Ed Miliband’s Cabinet-level supporters came in the top 19 with a particularly strong showing for Hilary Benn (76%) and Sadiq Khan (65%) in 4th and 6th place respectively. Seven women, rather than the minimum six, were ‘elected’ with Caroline Flint, Tessa Jowell, Diane Abbott, Emily Thornberry and both Angela and Maria Eagle joining Yvette Cooper. Liam Byrne and Jim Murphy scraped through in the bottom two places. The only male candidate who has not been in the shadow cabinet who made our readers’ cut was David Lammy in 16th place.
Current shadow cabinet members Pat McFadden (25th) and Shaun Woodward (29th) missed out with Chris Bryant, Fiona MacTaggart, Stephen Twigg, Stephen Timms, and John Healey just shy of the necessary votes. The Left Foot Forward poll implies that candidates in the real election will need 40% (or 103 votes) to be certain of election. Byrne and Murphy scrape in.
The full list is:
Yvette Cooper 93%
Ed Balls 86%
Andy Burnham 79%
Hilary Benn 76%
Alan Johnson 72%
Sadiq Khan 65%
Douglas Alexander 64%

Emily Thornberry 53%
Angela Eagle 53%
Peter Hain 49%
David Lammy 44%
Maria Eagle 42%
Liam Byrne 40%
Jim Murphy 40%
1,033 people voted in the poll which was organised by Left Foot Forward and used the same rules as the PLP election (ie voters voted for a minimum of 6 women and 6 men and up to 19 people in total).

Very dismayed, it seems your readers have voted for a person they recognize.
I wonder as to what swing the vote may of had had you published this article
