I’m sorry but what exactly is Tony Benn’s influence in this day and age? If he inspires a few people that’s great, but I can’t think of anything concrete.
Do they have to be based in Britain?
If so, my votes go for: Gordon Brown (he may not be popular but his influence in hard power terms as PM is undeniable), Ken Livingstone (his campaign has been the most high-profile uncompromising rejection of the coalition cuts), Len McCluskey (mainly for his role in the BA strikes), Ed Balls (mainly for his role in galvanising the fightback over BSF cuts/free schools), and I’m struggling to think of a 5th that matches the influence of those 4. Sad that they’re all men.
John Evans
Chukka Ummuna – newbie and already well known and respected
Harriet Harman – only person to come out of the leadership contest well so far!
Peter Hain – still the best/only proper campaigner in Shadow Cabinet. Still respected by left outside Labour due to anti-apartheid. Becoming an elder statesman
Tony Benn – still carries so much weight.
Tony Blair – ditto
Ryan
Carwyn Jones – the most senior left politician in power across the UK’s 4 governments, and because he won the Welsh Labour leadership election conclusively.
