William Hague, on a tour of 11 Conservative target seats in Scotland, yesterday predicted a breakthrough for the Tory party in Scotland. As James Macintyre, writing for the New Statesman says:
“This, surely, is the least credible forecast in this 3-day-old campaign so far.“
Here’s why:
• Research discussed on Left Foot Forward has led Jean Eagleston of the Financial Times to write:
“The Conservatives appear to have abandoned all hope of making significant gains in Scotland, as the struggle between Labour and the nationalists increasingly dominates politics north of the border.”
• Data for UK Polling Report has the Conservatives trailing the SNP and Labour by a considerable distance.
• Over the weekend, the Conservative Party’s candidate for Glasgow South West, Heather MacLeod, resigned as over questions concerning her financial affairs. In doing so, Ms MacLeod likened senior members of her party to a “nest of vipers”, adding:
“The Scottish party really needs to look at itself. It needs to understand why it is not electable. It is becoming more reactionary, rather than learning about how to become more successful.“
In making his assertion about a potential breakthrough for the Tories North of the border, as someone famous once said, Mr Hague “cannot be serious!”

Of course, since they only have one Scottish seat at the moment, even if they only gained one more they could still call it a 100% increase.

This little 3D animated film from a Muvizu user in Glasgow sums up nicely what the Conservative Party will do for Scotland.
