The equalities watchdog, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has written to Reform UK, asking what measures Nigel Farage’s party is taking to ensure it is complying with the Equality Act, after receiving complaints “alleging unlawful activity” in the party.

The complaints come following the airing of an undercover ITV documentary, A Year in Reform, which showed party members and councillors expressing racist and misogynistic views.

In one example, councillor Alan Feeney in Solihull, was recorded saying that the area had been “infested” with Asian families, who he referred to as “absolute parasites”.

Mr Feeney also said of Asian people: “Drag them out of their homes, stick them on planes and f*** them off to Pakistan.” In another example, a Reform activist is filmed saying Muslims can’t be British.

A spokesperson for the EHRC is quoted in the Independent as saying: “We have written to Reform UK regarding concerns expressed following ITV News’ investigation, Undercover: A Year In Reform, which aired last month. We have asked for more information including what action the party is taking to comply with the Equality Act 2010.

“Following the broadcast of ITV’s documentary, we received complaints alleging unlawful activity under the Equality Act 2010, including concerns about racial and sexual remarks expressed by councillors, prospective councillors and members. As with every complaint we receive, we will assess the information provided carefully and, following that consideration, take action where appropriate.”

The EHRC said that political parties must comply with the Equality Act, and “take steps to avoid discrimination or harassment including on the grounds of race, religion or belief and sex”.
