Zelenskyy criticises Reform for taking down Ukrainian flags on council buildings
'Sometimes little, small mistakes can break big friendship'
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that he hopes Reform will put Ukrainian flags it has taken down on council buildings back up.
Zelenskyy made the comments in an interview with the Guardian. Many councils have flown the Ukrainian flag as a gesture of solidarity with the country’s people following Russia’s invasion.
Asked about Reform’s position that only St George’s crosses and union flags should be flown from council buildings, and some Reform councils taking down Ukrainian flags he said: “I hope it will be put back”.
Zelenskyy added: “I don’t want to be involved in any political things, but you know, the world is so sensitive today. Sometimes little, small mistakes can break big friendship or huge contacts. I think people have to not make mistakes, not to do anything which can break a friendship, and even if people do it [I would say:] ‘OK, so you did it, please let’s come back to the table, let’s speak, let’s understand each other.’”
Responding to Zelenskyy’s comments, Reform’s candidate for London Mayor Laila Cunningham said: “We’re a British country and our public buildings should have the British flag. It doesn’t mean that we don’t support Ukraine, in any way.”
