Reform UK has reinstated a Sunderland councillor that it suspended pending an investigation into a racist social media post he shared.

As exposed by Hope Not Hate, Glenn Gibbins shared a shocking post on social media which said that the Nigerian population in Sunderland should be melted down to “fill in potholes”.

In a post on 19 March 2024, Gibbins wrote: “Carnt believe amount of Nigerians in town… should melt them all down and fill in the pot holes!!”.

According to the BBC, Reform has decided to reinstate Gibbins with a final written warning because he apologised for making the post.

A spokesperson said: “He has apologised for making the post and accepts that it was made in extremely poor taste showing poor judgement.”

However, this isn’t the only offensive post Gibbins has shared.

Hope Not Hate revealed that Gibbins had described the BBC presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins as the “unfunniest fat repulsive lesbian hosts ever”.

He also said that female sports commentators should “stick to cooking…sewing …and home making”.

The Reform councillor has also referred to migrants who travel to the UK via small boat as an “army of Muslims who will in time turn on us”.

The fact that Reform suspended and readmitted Gibbins after investigating his shocking remarks shows just the kind of people they will allow to represent the party.

Hope Not Hate has been contacted for comment.
