Green Party leader Zack Polanski has criticised Andy Burnham’s plans to scrap the triple lock on state pensions to help fund a national care service.
Burnham is proposing to change the triple lock into a double lock, meaning the state pension will increase in line with inflation or 2.5 per cent, whatever is higher. This means that state pensions will likely rise more slowly and will no longer be linked to average earnings growth.
Burnham announced his plans at his speech at Labour Party conference.
Polanski criticised the move, accusing Labour of “going after pensioners”. He posted on social media: “Why is the Government going after pensioners? It’s time to tax the rich.”
A snap poll by YouGov suggests the public support scrapping the triple lock to fund social care reform by a margin of 48 per cent to 28 per cent.
