Tory press suddenly discovers the joys of MPs voting on Brexit

We're all 'unpatriotic bremoaners' now

Right-wing papers are very excited today about MPs voting for Brexit – the same papers that denounced anyone who thought parliament should have a say as ‘unpatriotic bremoaners’ trying to frustrate the will of the British people.

Perhaps because they like the outcome of this vote?

Trouble is – as even the Sun admits – yesterday’s motion, proposed by Labour to force publication of the government’s Brexit plan, is non-binding.

As per the High Court ruling last month (which remains law unless overturned by the Supreme Court), legislation must be passed by MPs for Article 50 to be triggered.

And though the Tory amendment to the motion gave March 31, 2017 as the trigger date, this could also potentially be changed by future legislation.

So no, this wasn’t a vote for Brexit, or even for triggering Article 50. That vote is currently being opposed by the government in the Supreme Court – with the fevered backing of these same newspapers.
