It just goes from bad to worse for Nigel Farage. The Reform UK leader has implied that the reason his party members and councillors have expressed racist and bigoted views is because they didn’t go to Eton and Oxford University.
Reform is currently engulfed in a racism scandal after a year-long undercover ITV investigation exposed party members for expressing racist and misogynistic views.
Last week, it was revealed that councillors described Asian families as “parasites” and said the government should “stick them on planes and **** them off to Pakistan”.
In footage broadcast yesterday, an unnamed Reform activist also said that asylum seekers should be put in “concentration camps” and that Muslims could not be British.
On Thursday, party officials are captured telling Farage they have to “defend the indefensible” and explain to him how he would be “protecting” a Reform candidate from being sacked.
Rather than dealing with the racism, misogyny and bigotry in his party which is widespread and systemic, Farage has once more claimed that his party are the victims of an ‘establishment stitch up’.
In a statement to the Express, Farage said: “Maybe what I’ll do is I’ll commission a team of undercover [operatives], and we’ll go and speak to a thousand Tory councillors. You’ll find worse. You’ll find it everywhere. You’ll find it in the pub tonight.
“It’s people, and particularly if they’re provoking conversation. Not everyone’s been to Oxford University. Not everyone’s been to Eton. Not everyone expresses themselves in very carefully formulated language.”
His comments were ridiculed online, with one social media user writing: “I never went to Oxford and Eton either but still managed to not tell my coworkers that I’d like to molest my daughter in a bath or rape my colleagues. It’s actually quite easy.”
Another added: “I don’t think you need to go to Eton to realise being misogynistic, racist & xenophobic is a Bad Thing!”
