“Every time I have to make a decision I think to myself "what would Liz Truss do?"”

Former prime minister Liz Truss has been widely mocked after suggesting the West would face a “very, very serious crisis” under Kamala Harris.

Speaking on LBC this week, Truss praised Donald Trump as a “very good” president and backed his action in the Middle East. She described Iran as a threat to “global stability” that Trump had been right to “call out.”

“I think if we’d had Kamala Harris, the West would be facing a very, very serious crisis,” she argued.

I believe that the nuclear weapons the Iranians were developing are a threat, not just to the Middle East, but to global stability.”

She continued that when she was foreign secretary and then prime minister, she saw former president Joe Biden “kick the can down the road” instead of “calling out” the Iranians.

Her remarks come as the conflict in Iran has crippled international shipping due to the ongoing impasse in the Strait of Hormuz, which has inflicted a global economic shock and sent energy prices soaring.

The comments quickly drew ridicule online, with critics referencing Truss’s infamously brief tenure in office.

“So, what’s the old lettuce head up to these days?…oh Lord,” campaign group Leeds for Europe wrote.

Another mocked: “Every time I have to make a decision I think to myself ” what would Liz Truss do?””

“Crashing the UK economy in 40 days is biblical. We should have chosen the #lettuce!” one X user wrote.

In the same interview, Truss also criticised the civil service over the fallout from Peter Mandelson’s vetting controversy, drawing parallels with the circumstances that led to her own downfall.

She described the system as “completely dysfunctional” and blamed its structure, particularly reforms under New Labour, for a lack of accountability. Taking aim at Keir Starmer, she said he had been “hoisted on his own petard.”

“I don’t have any sympathy on a personal level,” Truss said, adding that she did not believe senior civil servant Olly Robbins should have been sacked over the foreign office’s failure to disclose details related to the case.

Other dismayed onlookers turned on LBC for giving Truss airtime.

“You wonder how serious journalism died in the West?” one user wrote. “Look no further than this shameless display by this so-called presenter. You had the worst British prime minister on your show and you sat there with her like she’s your pal. What a shame. LBC should be ashamed of itself.”
