Let’s have a bonfire of ‘poodle’ regulators replaced by ones that are independent of the regulated industry, equipped with dedicated staff but who would be unable to take a job in the regulated organisations for at least five years, empowered to requisition internal documents, subpoena witnesses and impose punitive penalties and initiate prosecutions. Prem is right we also need transparency including the power to waive claims for secrecy under “commercial in confidence”!

But for those who feel strongly about pension rights, don’t vote Tory; this particular problem arose under George Osborne & David Cameron’s coalition government (so yes the Lib-Dems are also responsible by association).

10,000 bn of pensions debts hidden off the books.

Tom, you are right. Regulation favours the big incumbents at the expense of competition and the customer.

After all, many of the regulatory bodies are made up of people once employed by those they now regulate.

Regulation is the management of capitalism. We need a socialist approach that enables the control of the behaviour of these financial companies for the good of the working people of the UK.
