They believe economics is circumscribed by both political and ecological considerations. They are putting forward alternative thinkers for the Swedish Central Bank Prize in Economic Science. This is important because economics has been captured by the finance industry and many policy makers and advisers have been indoctrinated through a ‘training’ in neo-liberal economics.

By: Ralph Musgrave https://leftfootforward.org/2019/09/dont-let-the-nobel-prizes-fool-you-central-banks-are-political/#comment-981368 Wed, 18 Sep 2019 13:01:50 +0000 https://leftfootforward.org/?p=138496#comment-981368 Hannah Dewhirst says in reference to QE, “Decisions with huge real-world consequences like these, shouldn’t be made without democratic involvement.” Well the decision to embark on QE in the UK did actually involve “democratic involvement”: Mervyn King, the then governor of the Bank of England consulted the then finance minister, Alistair Darling, before implementing QE.

Having said that, please note I have supported Positive Money (for whom Hannah seems to work) since it was first set up. In particular I support what has long been the central idea promoted by PM, namely what they call “Sovereign Money”, i.e. the idea that only central banks and governments should create money, not private banks. That idea would seem to be tailor made for the political left. But the political left is strangely silent on that idea. I suggest the left needs to put its thinking cap on.
